Charles Henry Butcher was born in Beck Row (Mildenhall Q3-1889 4A:711), son of Isaac and Naomi BUTCHER (née RINGER).

1891 census...Aged 1, he was at 43 High Street, Beck Row with his father Isaac BUTCHER [39] general labourer; his mother Naomi[42] born Moulton; brother William [13] farmer's boy and sisters Elizabeth [15] and Alice [11]. All except his mother were born in Mildenhall. (Beck Row and Mildenhall were synonymous in most records). There was an older brother Harry John [1870-1946] and elder sisters Rosa [1874-1957] and Ellen [1975] and younger sister Lily [1892].

His father died in 1899

1901 census...Aged 11 he was at Wild Mere Lane, Holywell Road with his widowed mother, sister Rosa [26] brother William [22] and sister Lily [9]

1911 census...Aged 21, a single farm labourer, he was lodging in Cavenham with his brother William and William's wife Emma [29] born West Row.


Charles enlisted in Bury St Edmunds. Formerly in the 9th Battalion. His Army records have not been found so it is impossible to find where or when he was wounded. Also there were seldom citations for the award of the Military Medal

Charles Butcher is buried in St Sever Cemetery extension, Rouen, grave S:2:HH:2
and commemorated on the Cavenham memorial and originally on the Mildenhall war memorial
